How to halt state Workers’ mass Sack in Nigeria —Mimiko

A former Vice Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko in Ondo state and political science don at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof Femi Mimiko has recommended way out of retrenchment of workers by state government in the face of lack of funds and how to resolve the current shutdown in Kaduna.

In his post on social media & obtained by SUNSHINETRUTH, Prof Mimiko, a younger brother to a former Ondo state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, said the revenues sharing formular must be reviewed.

Kaduna, Labour, & Gov el-Rufai

It doesn’t make any economic sense to service less than one percent of the population of a State with over 80% of its revenue, as is the case today across the nation.

Whether minimum wage determination should be retained on the Exclusive legislative list also deserves to be fully and courageously interrogated – given prevailing circumstances.

Somehow, the ability of each government to pay its workers, after closing the well known leakage points, should be seriously considered. The revenue allocation formula also, is an open sore deserving of urgent and patriotic attention.

Unquestionably, leadership is about courage, and without prejudice to the correctness or otherwise of many of his (highly divisive) actions, Gov el-Rufai has demonstrated that he possesses courage in good measure.

Even so, the manner of his prosecution of the current ‘battle’ with labour cannot be right. Flinging workers out of their jobs at this very difficult times can’t be the appropriate response to this funding crisis, which truly deserves to be confronted.

As quite a number of pundits have opined, this is a subject that has to be addressed nationally, preferably as part of the entire package of re-constituting the governance structure of this country. Even this, is urgent too.
