A training workshop organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in collaboration with the Institute for Media and Society (IMS) on electoral and broader governance programming is now in progress in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The workshop is part of activities lined-up for the 2021 NAWOJ Week celebration even as IMS and the Association brought participants from all the states from the Southern Nigeria.
Declaring open the workshop in Akure, the Ondo state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Donald Ojogo appreciated the organisers for choosing Ondo state to host journalists from across the southern part of the country.
Ojogo urged participants who are mostly drawn from broadcast media organizations to make judicious use of the knowledge to be gained at the workshop.
Also speaking, the Director General of the IMS, Dr Akin Akingbolu and the Chairperson of the Nigeria association of women journalist, Mrs Doris Olumoko said the workshop was to equip journalists on voters education, electoral matters and the need for them to maintain professional conduct in reporting political matters before, during and after elections.
They implored participants to make judicious use of the opportunity by giving total commitment to the workshop
The General Manager of NTA, Mr Segun Ojelade commended the organisers for bringing the workshop up at this time that Social media was causing more damage than good to the democratic process through fake news.
Similarly the Ondo State Chairman of NUJ, Adetona Aderoboye who was represented by the State Secretary of NUJ, Leke Adegbite urged journalists to see the workshop as a rare opportunity to develop and update their knowledge on electoral matters and how to handle latest professional challenges.
The Chairman who promised that Ondo state NUJ would continue to support NAWOJ to achieve successes, said the journalists in the state would continue to be leading in the best way of election coverage and reportage.
The workshop ends on tuesday 22nd June, 2021 as Resource persons such as Veteran Journalist, Mr Adebayo Bodunrin; Ace Broadcaster, Anike Funke Treasure and Dr Gbenga Abimbola of the AAUA.
