NUJ, Manipal Hospital Partner On Cancer Prevention
Journalists in Nigeria were on Wednesday taken through what constitute risk factors for cancer and the best way to prevent their effect on the human system.
Prof Somashekhar S. P, an expert in Surgical, Gynaec Oncology & Robotic Surgeon in India disclosed the risk factors to includes Tabacco intake, diet, generic factors, alcohol among other factors.
Somashekar, who is the Chairman Oncology, Manipal Hospitals India made the disclosure in a virtual workshop for media practitioners in Nigeria in partnership with Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The workshop, which had the Nigerian High Commissioner to India, Ahmed Sule in attendance, is the second in the series of health seminars organized for Journalists in Nigeria by the Indian Hospital.
Speaking during the workshop, Dr. Somashekar S.P, Chairman Oncology, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, Manipal Hospitals said, the main focus of the workshop was to help citizens of Nigeria understand the importance of early diagnosis of cancer and the various treatments available for the disease.
Dr. Somashekar who also introduced participants to various technologies which includes Robotics and associated technologies, express hope that cancer could be tackle at it early stage with technological advancements and innovations reaching a new dimension in the field of oncology.
Speaking further, Dr. Somashekar unveiled various methods available to easily diagnose the tumour and help prevent any serious outcomes by detecting it early before the cancer reaches an advanced stage.
While throwing light on various advanced chemotherapy and surgical procedures available for the treatment, explained to participants the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and healthy diet which helps prevent cancer.
Adding to this, Mr Karthik Rajagopal, Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt. Ltd said, “the session was very interactive and has been thoroughly enjoyed by participants.”
“The present pandemic taught us the importance of building a global network of healthcare ecosystem which will help us to bridge the gaps in the healthcare chain.
“With this aim, we are planning on conducting many such workshops that will make us share our knowledge and also help us in learning insights from the global healthcare ecosystem. We will be adding multiple such workshops in the future which will cater to different Centre(s) of Excellence (CoEs) and do our part in making quality healthcare accessible to the global community,” he said.
The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzo and Mr Shuaibu Usman Leman, National Secretary, Nigeria Union of journalists who spoke at the workshop express delight in partnering with the Manipal hospital for the well-being of their members.

More than 90 Journalists across Nigeria participated in the workshop.
