Tragedy struck in Ikare-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State when hundreds of people were rendered homeless by heavy rainfall while a popular butcher was also killed in the incident.
SUNSHINETRUTH learnt that the downpour which lasted about 40 minutes rendered many homeless as the rainstorm destroyed houses.
Areas badly affected by the disaster were Ilepa, Okela, Okorun, Okegbe, Iku, Okeruwa and Okoja quarters while other parts of Ikare were also badly destroyed.
The deceased butcher identified simply as ‘Ayepareti’ was said to have lost his life while taking a cover from the rain at a house at Okela when the unfortunate incident happened.
The building was said to have collapsed on him and was rushed to hospital where he was confirmed dead.
According to a community leader, Ibrahim Kilani, the torrential rain which started after 7pm was accompanied by heavy hailstones.
On his part, the Chairman of Ikare Akoko Elders Forum, Elder James Oladetohun who sympathized with the victims called on the government to come to their aid.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had sent his Deputy Lucky Aiyedatiwa to visit the victims and Ikare community.
At Owa-Ale of Ikare palace, Oba Adeleke Adedoyin briefed the Deputy Governor on the level of damages recorded.
