Ondo govt threatens traders dumping waste on Akure roads

….ODSWMA boss, Rev Adeyemo lauds residents over sanitation compliance

The General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority (ODSWMA), Rev. (Mrs) Ayo Adeyemo, has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by the residents of the state during the November edition of the monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise, despite non restriction of both human and vehicular movements.

This is just as she warned against dumping of waste on major roads and drainage especially at Oja oba axis of Akure.

Rev. Adeyemo who spoke shortly after leading top officials and other staff of the Authority to monitor the monthly sanitation exercise in some areas within the state capital, also encouraged all the residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily affair.

She explained that today’s Saturday Environmental Sanitation was with no full restriction of human and vehicular movements to honour the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), which is marking its convocation ceremony.

“I’m particularly impressed that today’s exercise recorded high level of compliance. Despite non restriction of movement, the people still complied. The level of compliance was high. People were busy cleaning their environment”, the GM said.

She, however, advised traders at Oja-Oba and residents within the axis to desist from the habit of dumping their waste in the drainages and on the roads but always keep it in prescribed waste bins for easy evacuation.

Rev Adeyemo also warned against burning of refuse, saying it is injurious to human health.

“Drainages are not meant for deposal of waste, drainages are for free flow of water. So, I want to advise the people of this state that they should always keep their environment clean, making sure their environment is healthy and safe.

“All marketers should know, when they close at the end of everyday, they should keep their environment clean. And some people are in the habit of burning their refuse, this is against the law. Burning of refuse is totally against the law and people must desist from it”, she stressed.

The GM charged the people of the state to continue to support and cooperate with the government to further ensure healthier and safer environment for sustainable social and economic development.
