FUTA Students protest against attacks, extortion by miscreants

ONDO NANS JCC AXIS MEETS FUTA MANAGEMENT

The leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students(NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Ondo Axis, the umbrella body of all students’ association across all tertiary institutions in Ondo State, met the management of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on the lingering security situation around the South Gate area of its campus.

Students have since taken to a peaceful and well coordinated protest to air their displeasure with how miscreants extort and inflict terror on them at their school gate.

FUTA’s Vice Chancellor led his management team to welcome the Comr. Surprise Omotosho led Nans entourage. He appreciated the quick response of the NANS comrades and their show of solidarity to their FUTA colleagues.

He, however, confirmed that the situation has been on for quite a while. He tasked the students’ union leaders and the Nans executives present to raise recommendations and ideas that can proffer a long lasting solution to the menace.

While giving his address, the FUTASU Speaker expressed his utter displeasure at how the management looked on while the extortion went on. “This extortions has been happening for a long time. The efforts of the school’s internal security architecture and external security agencies were not effective enough to put an end to this menace”.

He recommended to the University that they should light up the South, North and West Gates of the campus while also charging external and internal securities to have a routine patrol and also station a permanent base of external securities around South West Gate.

Comr. Surprise commended the Vice Chancellor and his entire management for answering swift calls to liaise and negotiate solutions. The number one Student in the State told the management to organize a security summit to orientate students on how to be very security cautious and also gather security informations that can help the security units.

Further, he told the management to liaise with the State’s Amotekun Corps so as to have a permanent base at South Gate.


He charged the management to apprehend the miscreants with immediate alacrity because these hoodlums are known and their hideouts popular. It will be just to get them arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

The National Financial Secretary of NANS (Sir Newton) discussed about the incompetence of the school’s Sheriffs securities and the need for a total overhauling of the unit so that they can be effective in saving the students and properties of the University.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adeola Fuwape, responded by assuring all and sundry for a swift response to all demands.


He instructed the Director of works of the university to act fast on the lightning of the affected areas.

He charged the Dean of Students’ Affairs to put a call through to the Toll Free line officers so they can rectify the University’s Toll-Free lines.

He promised to meet with the Commander of Amotekun Corps to create a post around South Gate axis and also promised to provide needed facilities for the corps.

He pleaded with the students’ union executives to call off the peaceful protests so that Academic activities can resume and put an end to further alterations on the University’s calendar.

FUTASU President, Comrade Ibiyemi Abiodun, in his speech declared that until the demands are met, the peaceful demonstrations will continue and that he would need to to call a CONGRESS to relay the outcome of the meeting to the entire students and if at all they see their demands are being met, they will call off the protests.

Conclusively, the University’s Vice Chancellor assured the entire student union body and NANS executives present that the demands will be met as he already instructed his men to get into action.

Present at the meeting were the FUTASU students union Executives, NANS JCC executives, Zonal executives represented by Comr. Opiano Zone D PRO, NANS NATIONAL FINANCIAL SECRETARY( SIR Newton), Nans jcc directors and Stakeholders.
