In furtherance to the pursuit of the mandate given to the Ondo State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) to keep the environment clean and healthy for the citizens, OSEPA has commissioned plastic waste collectors to mop-up plastic waste from the Canal behind Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Akure.
Earlier, the Agency had received several reports that plastics and other solid wastes were blocking the Canal which could cause flooding and wreck havoc if not properly handled.
Speaking at the collection site, the Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Oyeniyi Oseni thanked Mr. Governor for giving the Agency space to operate.
He stated that the present administration is passionately committed to the well-being of the public and will constantly ensure that the State is safe and healthy for all.
The SA noted that plastic wastes are non-biodegradable materials that must not be left carelessly in the environment.
He added that the State government would be partnering with corporate organizations and interested individuals to move plastic wastes off our environment.
The Ag. Permanent Secretary, Princess Korede Giwa said the Agency would be embarking on massive mop-up of plastic wastes across the State, starting from Akure metropolis.
The Acting Permanent Secretary, therefore, intimated the residents of Akure to be on the lookout for Plastic Collection Agents who will be moving round their localities to pick up plastic wastes. She enjoined them to cooperate with these agents.
The Director Pollution, Mr. Obanoyen urged the public to pay more attention to their environment and avoid indiscriminate dumping of plastic wastes.
He noted that these plastics would not only litter the environment but would end up polluting the water ways.
The Fiwasaye mop-up exercise was a huge success as several tonnes of pet bottles and other plastic wastes were evacuated from the Canal.
