AAUA needs peaceful students’ unionism to sustain global standard —VC, Prof Ige tells new SUG Exco

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has urged the leadership of the Student Union to cooperate with the University Management to sustain the peaceful and steady academic calendar of the Institution.


Prof. Ige gave the advice on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Inauguration Ceremony of the newly-elected Student Union Government (SUG) leaders for the 2022/2023 academic session.


The VC said, “Adekunle Ajasin University considers student unionism as an important platform for building future leaders and strengthening the nation’s young democracy. Besides, this university regards responsible and responsive student unionism as an important part of the platform for instituting peaceful and stable academic calendar.  


“As a Management, we are on the same page with all our staff unions to sustain stable academic calendar. I want to, therefore, urge you to join us on this pursuit of global academic standard of promptness and excellence.


“I enjoin you to imbibe and demonstrate the kernels of responsibility, transparency, responsiveness, patriotism and care for the student body that make AAUA student unionism tick. You must realize that what you make of the stable and peaceful academic stability and life entrenched by your predecessors will determine what and where your place will be in the history of this University now and in the years to come.

“I, therefore, advise you to be on the good and enviable side of history by helping to build structures that will make this University attain the much desired world-class university status.”


While congratulating the new leaders and the entire students of the University on the success of their election, Prof. Ige announced that as a tradition of the University, a Leadership Summit would be organized for the student leaders to evolve and entrench virtuous leadership qualities in them.


While appreciating the outgoing Student Union leaders led by Kolade Ogunsanmi for demonstrating excellent leadership, Prof. Ige thanked the Student Affairs Division, and the Student Union Electoral Committee headed by Prof. Olukayode Afolabi for prosecuting a hitch-free election.


Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Olusegun Akanbi, had thanked Vice Chancellor for always giving prompt supports to the student body, and appreciated the outgoing leaders for cooperating with him.


In his Valedictory Speech, Ogunsanmi highlighted some of his achievements and thanked the Prof. Ige-led Management without whom his administration would not have recorded any success. The outgoing President urged his successor to always toe the path of dialogue, consultation and peace.


The new President, Mayomi Adekanye, in his Acceptance Speech, appreciated all AAUA students for giving him the baton of leadership to serve them.

He sought the supports of all stakeholders, including the University Management, staff and students, and the Akungba Community.
