Ondo State on track to be the first Nigerian state to take full control of its electricity governance

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has communicated its readiness to cede electricity regulatory roles to Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau pursuant to the provisions of the newly enacted Electricity Act 2023 which grants sub-national governments the rights to regulate electricity across all its value chain viz., generation, transmission and distribution.
At the meeting held on August 9, 2023 at NERC Headquarters, Abuja, the Commission promised to collaborate with Ondo State Government to ensure a successful transition.
Present at the meeting on NERC’s side were Engr Sanusi Garba, Chairman/CEO of NERC; Mr. Musiliu Olalekan Oseni, Vice Chairman/ Commissioner, Market Competition & Rates; Mr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner Engineering, Performance and Monitoring; Mrs. Aisha Mahmud, Commissioner, Consumer Affairs; Mr. Yusuf Ali, Commissioner, Planning, Research and Strategy; and Mr. Dafe C. Akpeneye, Commissioner, Legal, Licencing and Compliance.
Ondo State team was led by Engr. Razaq Obe, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources. In the team were Engr. Stephen Bolawole, State Coordinator, Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau; Mr. Odion Omonfoman, Consultant to Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Engr. Idowu Desmennu.
Both parties agreed to timeously but meticulously conclude transition since the state’s success would be the example to other states.
