The Youth Wing of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Ondo State, on Friday threatened to take legal action to compel the Ondo State House of Assembly if the lawmakers failed to invoke Section 189(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s Secretariat, in Akure today, one of the PDP youth leaders, Tayo Oluyi, said; “it is crucial that the House of Assembly, in the interest of our state and its citizens, upholds the constitutional provisions to ensure the continued and effective functioning of our government.
Recall that the PDP in the state had yesterday called for the impeachment process of Governor Akeredolu for violation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
Oluyi flanked by other PDP youth leaders, “We have written a letter of ‘Request to invoke Section 189(4) of the 1999 Constitution on the state of health of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’, to the State House of Assembly.
“And if the State House of Assembly failed in this regard, we won’t hesitate to explore other legitimate constitutional means to press our demands.”
Oluyi, who addressed the newsmen said that; “We are ready as a main opposition party to take the governor to court, or even the Speaker if they failed to invoke Section 189(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on him (governor).
“It is also in our legal rights too to take to the streets if they failed to address this because our demands are very simple. We can’t have a governor that is yet to address the citizens since he returned from his medical vacation.
“If truely the governor is fit, he should come out to address the good people of Ondo state, it should not be something that is much for him to do,”
But according to Oluyi, the state has long been a beacon of democracy and good governance, saying to sustain this legacy, “we must champion openness and accountability.”
However, Youth leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southwest zone have lambasted the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State chapter for seeking the resignation or impeachment of Governor Akeredolu.
The Youth leaders led by the Southwest Zonal Youth Leader, Lawal Kolade, told newsmen in Akure on thursday that the threat by the PDP Youths and leadership was unnecessary.
According to Lawal popularly known as ‘Paff’, the PDP leadership and youth wing in Ondo state are confused and dying in the state as a result of electoral defeats they had suffered in recent years in the state due to popularity of Governor Akeredolu.
The APC Youth leader noted that there is no doubt that Akeredolu is well-loved by the people of Ondo State considering their massive electoral support and prayers during his trying time, pointing out that it is however illogical for the state chapter of the PDP to be calling for his resignation or impeachment by the state House of Assembly.
