Ondo lawmaker, Chris Ayebusiwa: Celebrating one year of excellent representation

Today, June 3rd, 2024, marks the first anniversary of Hon. Chris Ayebusiwa as the honourable Member representing Okitipupa Constituency 1 at the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly.

The political journey of Hon Ayebusiwa to victory was far from a walkover. It began with a highly competitive primary election, but his steadfast, focused, strategic pose, and decisiveness were on full display as he navigated through the challenging landscape of party politics. He did not shy away from the hurdles; instead, he faced them head-on, displaying courage in the face of adversities and he got the winning he deserves with dignity.

In a way, the primary election was a rigorous test of character and capability, and thankfully, garnered over 60% of the vote cast, a significant score that saw him defeat the incumbent – a feat that speaks volumes about his appeal to the party and the confidence the members reposed in him. Meanwhile, the victory was not merely about numbers; it represented a new dawn and the people’s desire for true leadership.

As soon as the primary election was concluded, preparations for the general election began. Chris also made a difference during the campaign by his ability to connect with the grassroots, articulate a clear and compelling vision, and mobilize a broad coalition of supporters from his political party, the APC, and beyond. His focus was not just on winning but evolving a mandate that would align with the expectations of the people. His knowledge of his political terrain, people’s love for his person and sheer determination were critical ingredients for his ultimate success at the poll, wherein he secured victory amidst a field of formidable contenders.

To a sure-footing for the very critical legislative assignments ahead, Hon Chris, alongside other honourable members-elect attended a rigorous workshop, held at the Lagos Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos State, organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). And, as soon as he was inaugurated as a member of the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, marking the official commencement of their legislative duties, he was back in his constituency for a thank-you tour.

Setting out with a strong commitment to empower members of his constituency, Hon. Ayebusiwa appointed aides with fair compensation above the minimum wage. His first salary as a legislator was shared among community leaders, religious leaders, party stalwarts, and ward executives. Chris has since provided been providing support to numerous constituents in need, reinforcing his dedication to improved welfare and well-being.

The significant contributions Hon Ayebusiwa has made to his constituency have spanned various sectors, including education, healthcare, community development and economic development while demonstrating a holistic approach to governance. In education, he organised quiz competitions among secondary schools, awarding ₦200,000, ₦150,000, and ₦100,000 to the first, second, and third positions respectively.

Hon Ayebusiwa partnered Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, to provide technical training, enhancing skills and employability among constituents.

He also partnered with the Seed of Deborah to pay the school fees of selected students every term of the school session and distributed exercise books to primary schools across the constituency. He also provides support for higher education students by paying school fees, offering stipends, and assisting with allied issues.

On the community development front and employment, Hon. Ayebusiwa has facilitated jobs for three individuals who are now in the employ of Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue and another in the United Bank for Africa, with more employment opportunities underway. He organised community health outreaches, offering diagnosis, testing, prescriptions, and free drugs for various ailments, and, in so doing, promoting better healthcare for members of his constituency.

As a legislator, Chris Ayebusiwa has demonstrated exemplary commitment to his legislative responsibilities, effectively contributing to significant bills that address critical issues within the state such as the bill for the creation of 33 additional local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state, Appropriation Bill, etc.

He has consistently represented the interests and concerns of his constituents, advocating issues in their favour and ensuring that their voices are heard.

Through diligent oversight, he has monitored the implementation of laws. As the House Committee Chairman on Tertiary Institutions, he has conducted duty tours and inspections to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa. His contributions as a member of the Works Committee has been very encouraging.

Chris effectively delivers his statutory roles in other committees, including Public Accounts, Judiciary and Public Petition, Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Special Persons and Disability, Water Resources, Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Ethics and Privileges, OSOPADEC, and the Governor’s Office and Protocol, among others. His comprehensive engagement in these diverse committees highlights his commitment to public service and legislative oversight, ensuring that various sectors receive the necessary attention and resources for development and modification.

In the last one year, not a single day has passed without Chris thinking about how to better represent his constituency to further prove his mettle, yet, he is not resting on his ours. Hence, as we celebrate this significant milestone, we acknowledge his visionary outlook and pursuit, the challenges encountered and his commitment to winning which reflects in his tangible achievements. Hon. Chris Ayebusiwa has exemplified dedication and commitment to the progress of his constituency and the well-being of the people.

The journey has been challenging, entailing challenges and trials. The bumpy routes notwithstanding, fine instincts and experience have helped him to press forward and rededicate himself to the task of effective representation and making excellence a culture. Despite inevitable challenges, his resilience, proactive nature and problem-solving skills have set a new standard for leadership within the constituency.

The journey has been marked by significant successes, but these achievements have not come without their daunting challenges. But for Chris, each impediment serves to make him stronger and more equipped to serve the people of Okitipupa Constituency 1. His commitment to overcoming sundry challenges remains a driving force to towards continuously improving and delivering exceptional service.

Let me announce that, in marking the one-year anniversary, Hon Ayebusiwa is giving out ₦10,000 to 100 women in the constituency. This is reinforcing the fact that, more than he has done in this one year, he continues to forge a path toward brightening the future for all within the constituency.
