…..As 45,220 pregnant women benefit from Abiyamo Scheme in 5years.
The Ondo state government has enrolled 97,738 Public servants and their dependants for Orange Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS) since it was flagged off on the 27 of September, 2022.
Similarly, the State government’s Abiyamo Scheme has recorded over 45,220 beneficiaries (pregnant women and children below 5 years of age), while 50,503 Vulnerable consisting of Widows, Elderly, People with disabilities, Women of reproductive have been registered under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund Programme (BHCPFP “Ileraloro Scheme).
The Director-General of the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission, Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin announced the success stories of the scheme during a Press Conference Tagged “Ondo State Contributory Health Scheme (ODCHS) Update” held in Akure on Tuesday, 2nd July, 2024.
According to Oyeneyin, ORANGHIS provides financial risk protection and significantly reduces Out-of-Pocket Expenditure on healthcare among public servants.
“Till date, 97,738, enrollees (Public servants and their dependants) currently have access to medical care in their chosen hospitals and over 426 surgeries have been performed in less than 2 years. Surgeries carried out under ORANGHIS include,
“Caesarian Section-666, Exploratory Laparotomy -5, Herniorrhaphy 76, Myomectomy-68, Appendectomy-129, Lump Excision-33, Circumcision-1, Slopsy-9, Orchidopexy-2, Ovarian Cyst 25 and Hysterectomy-12.
“Since December, 2019 Abiyamo Scheme has recorded over 45,220 beneficiaries (pregnant women and children below 5 years of age). Over 14,75 babies have been delivered with 4,014 being through Caesarean section. We have 366 twins, 10 triplets and 2 quadruplets. It was at no cost.
“From October 2021, we have enrolled 50,503 Vulnerable across 203 wards in the 18 LGAs of the state under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund Programme (BHCPFP “Bera Lowo Scheme). The Vulnerable consists of Widows, Elderly, People with disabilities, Women of reproductive age group and Children under 5 years. Medical services including renal dialysis have been provided with over 9 intermediate and major surgeries performed so far,” the DG said.
“The Scheme makes it possible to draw from a contributory pool to fund healthcare for subscribers. It makes health insurance available for use whenever subscribers need it, mobilizing resources to strengthen our public and private hospitals and create jobs for the teeming health care workers in the State.
“It is fulfilling knowing that our State Government cares about our health, wellbeing and productivity of all public servants by subsidizing the premium for all public servants.
“ORANGHIS currently have 62 accredited health facilities (both government and private hospitals across the 18 local government areas) providing quality healthcare services to our enrollees at no cost at the point of care for covered services that include, outpatient and inpatient medical care surgeries, dental and optical care, laboratory and imaging, antenatal care, delivery including Caesarean section, management of diseases in children etc. which is the reason behind our slogan “naira wise, health smart.”
On the steps being taken to include traders, artisans and other members of informal sector, Oyeneyin disclosed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa would soon flag-off the scheme for the Informal Sector, saying “this will cater for over 90% of those in the informal sector.”
The Director General listed some of the steps to make the scheme more attractive and beneficial to include, “Capitation payment to providers have been reviewed upward to N750 per enrollee effective 15 of July 2024. This is to make more funds available for better services.
“Our service, drug, optical and dental tariff have also been reviewed upwards in line with prevailing economic situation in the country to guarantee quality services to our teeming enrollees.
“Upward review of the Abiyamo Scheme tariff for the care of all eligible pregnant women and children under 5 years.
“ORANGHIS Monitoring Committee comprising of stakeholders shall be set up to monitor the implementation of the scheme.
“Support and partner with providers in setting up state of the art Orange Health Insurance Building across public provider network under our hospital intervention initiative. This has kicked off with the planned Commissioning of the building in UNIMEDTHC Laje, State Specialist Hospital Akure and State Specialist Hospital, Ondo which is scheduled to take place this week.
“In furtherance to this commemoration ceremony, we will be embarking on free medical outreach today at the Governor’s office Complex and the State Secretariat Complex Alagbaka. All public servants are invited to be part of the exercise.
“We shall also be conducting free surgical interventions across the 18 local Government areas of the state. Details of the Surgical outreach will be communicated shortly.
“Commissioning of the Office Headquarters of the Commission in no distant time,” Oyeneyin said.
Some of the stakeholders at the event commended the Ondo State Contributory Health Commission under Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin for achieving set goals in the last 5years.

Wale Akinlosotu; the Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philip; the Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Health, Prof Simidele Odimayo; the ODHA committee on Health; the PS, MoH, Dr Niran Ikuomola; the PS, Hospitals Management Board, Dr Adiji; Labour leaders among others.
