Urgent Call for Enhanced Security in Akungba: Ensuring Safety for AAUA Students – A Call to Action
Dear Ondo State Government,
I am writing to express my deep concerns and that of the entire student body at Adekunle Ajasin University regarding the alarming security issues that have cornered the Akungba community. Our lives and those of our fellow students are at grave risk due to the increasing incidents of violent crimes. The urgent need for more security personnels during these trying times cannot be overstated nor understated.
Recent events have turned the Akungba community into a dangerous terrain, a place where armed thieves have had their field day and resorted to butchering students with knives and broken bottles after robbing them. This level of violence is unprecedented and has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among students. Many of us can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed – we are left to constantly worry about our safety. It is imperative that immediate measures are taken to restore safety and security in our community.
The current situation requires a robust and coordinated response from all relevant authorities. We are urging the Inspector-General of Police, Ondo State Government and Police Commissioner to take decisive but immediate action by deploying additional security personnels to the Akungba community and our university. The presence of more security officers will serve as deterrent to criminals and provide a sense of safety and reassurance to students. We need the government’s support to ensure that our community is safe for all residents.
Furthermore, the cooperation of the host community is essential in addressing these security concerns. We propose a security dialogue between the host community and the State.
This we have the intention of also replicating between the university management, stakeholders, and the leadership of the host community to develop a coordinated response. This synergy will help create a safer environment for all of us. The community’s involvement is crucial, as their support can significantly enhance our efforts to maintain security and address any issues that arise.
The challenges we face require a united and proactive approach. We have urged all AAUAITES to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and prioritize their safety at all times. This is with the hope that the government is going to address this issue with the utmost attention it deserves.
The Union is committed to addressing these issues and working towards a safer and more secure environment for everyone. We appreciate your anticipated reactions and support towards helping us navigate these difficult times.
We also copy this letter to all concerned bodies and security personnels within and outside Ondo State, including the Inspector-General of Police, Commissioner of Police, the Commander of Amotekun Corps, and the leadership of the Anti-Cultism units. We urge them to intensify their efforts in safeguarding our community and providing the necessary support to ensure our safety.
Our students deserve to live and study in a peaceful environment. Education is a fundamental right and a critical component of personal and societal development. When students are forced to live in a climate of fear, it undermines their ability to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential. Ensuring their safety is not just a matter of immediate security but also a long-term investment in the future leaders and professionals of our nation.
We are deeply concerned that the current state of insecurity is causing students to shy away from education. Many are reconsidering their commitment to their studies due to the constant threat of violence.
This trend is alarming, as it jeopardizes the future of our country. We are making significant sacrifices to pursue our education and contribute positively to society. Our destinies and lives should not be altered by those who seek to disrupt our progress.
In conclusion, we believe that with your intervention and the combined efforts of all relevant bodies, we can restore peace and security to the Akungba community. Our students deserve to live and study in an environment where they feel safe and protected. We look forward to your prompt action on this critical matter.
Thank you for your attention and understanding.
Sincerely,
OYINDAMOLA BOLADALE. O.
STUDENTS’ UNION PRESIDENT, ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY AKUNGBA AKOKO.
