The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Federal Government has approved the increase of monthly allowance for corps members under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from the previous ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 effective from July 2024.
The increment followed the signing of the new Minimum Wage Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu signed on July 29, 2024, after several days of negotiations with the labour unions.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
The approval, according to Embu was contained in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25 2024 and signed by the Chairman, Ekpo Nta, in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Corps members were previously paid a monthly allowance of ₦33,000 after an upward review of the minimum wage to ₦30,000 by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
The stipulated minimum wage for Nigerian workers is ₦70,000, according to the law.
