BILL FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, OYIN AKOKO, ONDO STATE, PASSES SECOND READING

A bill sponsored by Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, and Member representing Akoko Northeast/Northwest Federal Constituency, seeking to amend the Federal Colleges of Education Act (CAP F8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) to establish the Federal College of Education, Oyin Akoko, Ondo State, has passed its second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The bill was seconded by Hon. Mudashiru Lukman Alami, Member representing Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency of Osun State. After a robust debate, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education for further legislative action.

During the debate, Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero emphasized the urgency of addressing the teacher-student ratio challenge in Nigeria’s education system, noting that the establishment of the college would significantly boost the production of qualified teachers not only for Ondo State but for Nigeria as a whole. He stated:

“The conversion of the only College of Education in Ondo State into a university has created a gap in the training of teachers, which this new college seeks to address.

“By establishing the Federal College of Education in Oyin Akoko, we will provide our youth with access to quality education and contribute to improving educational standards in Nigeria. This bill is an investment in the future of our country’s education and our young generation.”

Hon. Ehindero further urged his colleagues to give the bill the necessary support, noting its importance in securing the future of education for the country. The bill, which was first introduced in the House on July 11, 2024, is expected to undergo further review by the Relevant Committee in the coming weeks.
