Abiyamo: Ondo state Contributory Health Commission flags off distribution of free birth kits to pregnant women

The Ondo State Contributory Health Commission has flagged off the distribution of free birth kits to pregnant women under the Abiyamo scheme in the State.

At the flag-off of the birth kits distribution at the UNIMEDTH, Akure complex and State Specialist Hospital Akure on Monday, the Director-General of the State Contributory Health Commission, Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin said the initiative is health palliative aimed at reducing the effects of the currently economic hardship.

Abiyamo, is an health programme of the present administration to cater for antenatal, delivery and caesarean section.

Oyeneyin applauded the programmes of the state Governor, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in the health sector especially his commitment to the scheme, stating that with the health scheme, there had been remarkable achievements.

The scheme, according to him has recorded 46,500 beneficiaries with over 16000 babies delivered out of which there are 400 twins, 10 triplets and two quadruplets.

He commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his support for residents noting that with the various insurance package in place, there has been improvement in the health sector.

Speaking at the event, The DG explained that since the commencement of Abiyamo scheme, beneficiaries have enjoyed free services calling on non beneficiaries to register with the residency card (kaadi igbeayo).

While commending the acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Adesina Akintan for providing improved services for the beneficiaries, Oyeneyin stated that the distribution will also be done in all health facilities rendering abiyamo services to enrollees.

He stressed the need for pregnant women to take care of themselves and their babies adding that they embrace family planning.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Awolowo Ajaka while flagging off the distribution commended the acting CMD of the hospital for qualitative service delivery noting that government has zero maternal death in Abiyamo programme due to government efforts.

He called on other pregnant women to embrace the scheme adding that they give prompt attention to ante natal clinic and also put to birth in health facilities.

He stressed the need for them to attend post natal clinic for overall health of both the mother and the baby.

Earlier in his welcome address, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo who was represented by his SA, Dr. Dolani Gbelela expressed appreciation to the Health Commissioner for his quality leadership in the health sector adding that the event aimed at giving back to pregnant women in the state.

The event also featured the handover of hospital commodities to the health facilities.

The event also took place at the Hospital in Akure, while other health facilities including General Hospital, Ore, General Hospital, Igbokoda, State Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa:; UNIMEDTH, Laje Ondo (formerly Mother and Child hospital, Laje, Ondo); State Specialist Hospital, Ikare Akoko and General Hospital, Owo will also benefit.
