Ondo Govt takes Over Electricity Market, boosts Regulatory Framework

In a significant development for the state’s energy sector, Ondo State government has officially taken over the electricity market after successfully meeting all conditions set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The transition places the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB) in charge of all electricity-related responsibilities, marking a new chapter in local energy management.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa had previously established a committee to facilitate this transition, ensuring a smooth handover and preparation for the state’s new regulatory role.

Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, expressed his enthusiasm for the takeover, highlighting its potential to improve electricity services for residents and create a more competitive market.

“This transition represents a vital step towards enhancing the quality of electricity supply in Ondo State,” said Alabi.

He also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his visionary leadership throughout the process, which he believes will yield significant benefits for the state’s citizens.

The transfer of responsibilities to OSERB is effective as of October 23, 2024, signaling a proactive approach by the Ondo State government to address long-standing challenges in the electricity sector and boost economic growth.
