NDDC hosts International Women’s Day Celebration in Ondo

….Charges women on Sustainable Development.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) today commemorated International Women’s Day celebration with a grand event held in Akure, with empowerment of women in Ondo State.

Themed; “The Role of Women in Sustainable Development,” the occasion aimed to highlight and celebrate the significant contributions of women to the sustainable growth of the Niger Delta region.

The event was powered by the Benoni Akpa Development Foundation and featured the participation of women leaders, dignitaries, policymakers, and advocates from various sectors.

The gathering emphasized the critical role women play in economic, social, and environmental sustainability, aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a welcome address, Hon. Ifedayo Sunday Abegunde, the Executive Director, Corporate Services of the NDDC, acknowledged the importance of women inclusivity in sustainable development.

Abegunde emphasized that sustainable progress is only possible when all members of society, particularly women, are given the platform to contribute their skills and perspectives.

The NDDC Executive Director, a former Reps member and former Ondo SSG noted, “Development is a collective effort, women must be empowered to participate in shaping a prosperous future. Today’s event is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that everyone, especially women, can contribute meaningfully to the region’s growth.”

Delivering a lecture, one of the Guest Speakers, Mrs. Oni Omowumi, pointed out that women’s health, both physical and mental, is fundamental to achieving broader sustainable development objectives.

“Women’s wellness impacts not only individual well-being but also the health, productivity, and resilience of entire communities,” Mrs. Oni stated.

Other Speaker, Hon. Victoria Yemi stressed that women’s contributions to sustainable development extend beyond their families to impact communities and economies globally.

In her lecture, one of the guest speaker, Justina Akeredolu, noted that women are often central in grassroots community development.

“Women are often central in grassroots community effort. Their involvement in local initiatives whether in education, health or economic project has a powerful impact on community resilience,” she said.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging stakeholders, government agencies, and the public to continue supporting women’s empowerment as a critical component of sustainable development.

The speakers underscored the need to invest in women’s health, education, and economic opportunities, stressing that this investment is not just a social obligation but also a catalyst for national growth.
