Young Nigerian Honored with the Diana Award for Transformative Social Action
An Ondo State Born Youth Advocate, Christopher Bayode Olusa, 25-year-old, from Nigeria, has been recognized with the prestigious Diana Award, the highest accolade given to young individuals making extraordinary contributions to social change or humanitarian efforts.
Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Diana Award celebrates exceptional young leaders who embody the late Princess’s legacy of compassion and dedication to impactful social action. Supported by both her sons, HRH The Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, this award has become a global symbol of youth empowerment.
Christopher’s journey into social advocacy is a testament to his unwavering commitment to equity, peace, and environmental sustainability. He is best known for spearheading the “Vote Not Fight” campaign, which galvanized thousands of Nigerian youths to embrace peaceful political participation. Additionally, he set a world record with a 112-hour speech marathon, using his voice to spotlight critical issues such as gender equality, climate justice, and youth inclusion.
As the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Youth Network, Christopher has been instrumental in mentoring a new generation of young activists. His initiatives, such as the PVC bus voter registration drive, have significantly increased youth electoral participation in Nigeria. Beyond this, he amplifies the voices of marginalized communities and continues to champion international youth diplomacy.
In 2023, Punch Nigeria highlighted Christopher’s work as a beacon of hope for Nigerian youths, showcasing his ability to turn advocacy into tangible results. This global recognition through the Diana Award solidifies his place among the world’s most influential young changemakers.
Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of The Diana Award, praised Christopher’s achievements, saying:
“We warmly congratulate our new Diana Award Recipients from across the world who are dedicating their time to making positive change. These young people demonstrate that young people have the power to change the world; a belief also held by Diana, Princess of Wales. We know by receiving this honour they will inspire more young people to get involved in their communities.”
How Are Diana Award Recipients Chosen?
Diana Award nominees are selected through a rigorous process involving nominations by professionals who recognize their contributions. To qualify, nominees must have consistently demonstrated impactful leadership, vision, and social action for at least 12 months.
This year’s selection process was highly competitive, with over 1,700 nominations from around the world. A panel of over 80 judges representing 30 countries evaluated submissions based on five core criteria: vision, social impact, inspiring others, youth leadership, and the nominee’s social action journey.
Christopher’s recognition among this year’s recipients reflects not only his dedication but also his ability to inspire a movement. As Nigeria grapples with its challenges, his work is a reminder of the transformative power of youth in shaping a brighter, more equitable future.
