ODHASC Commissioner, Adebusuyi seeks stiffer sanction against indiscriminate waste disposal in Akure

…..CALLS FOR PROPER LAW ENFORCEMENT.

A Chieftain of the APC, Hon. Idowu Pius Adebusuyi has declared that the only way Ondo State can pride itself again as one of the neatest states in Nigeria, is when there is attitudinal change and enforcement of existing sanitation laws to address waste management challenges.

The Commissioner 1 in the Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission, said until this is done, the state would continue to look the way it is.

Speaking on the dirty state of major roads in Akure due to indiscriminate dumping of waste, he stressed the need for genuine collaboration between relevant government authorities and the public to tackle the menace of indiscriminate waste disposal.

The former lawmaker, said that Ondo state Government, under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has done a lot in managing waste, but residents who are supposed to help government achieve a cleaner state, have continued to turn major roads across the state particularly, in Akure to dumpsites.

He expressed sadness that wastes in the city of Akure are poorly managed.

This, the former local Government Boss noted, has given room for communicable diseases in residential areas close to the heaps of wastes

“There is a need for a change in people’s attitude towards waste disposal and open defication, Go to Ara-Kale road among others, the heaps of wastes and feaces there, is an eyesore. Water channels are filled with wastes, which can result to floodings when it rainy season. This is Akure, the state capital. it shouldn’t be so” he said.

Adebusuyi, the Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency DG of Aiyedatiwa/Adelami APC Campaign Committee urged Waste Management Authority, to embark on regular awareness programme on the dangers it poses, believing that this would bring changes in people’s attitudes.

According to him, the State Government has laws on sanitation that must be enforced, to bring about the needed change in the State.

He also appealed to residents to take care of their environment, saying that a dirty and untidy area is a big treat to their health.
