IWD: NRHJN harps on women’s full control of reproductive health

The Network of Reproductive Health Journalists, Nigeria celebrates 2025 International Women’s Day

March 8, 2025

As the world marks the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD), the Network of Reproductive Health Journalists, Nigeria, (NRHJN) joins in amplifying the call for women’s rights, particularly their reproductive rights, which remain fundamental to gender equality and social justice.

This year’s theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” reminds us that no woman can truly be empowered unless she has full control over her reproductive health.

Women must have the right to make informed decisions about their bodies, access quality healthcare without discrimination, and be free from coercion, violence, or societal pressure that infringes upon their dignity.

It is unacceptable that in many parts of Nigeria, women and girls still face barriers to accessing reproductive healthcare, endure harmful practices, and suffer injustice when their rights are violated.

We must collectively ensure that those who perpetuate such barbaric victimisation are held accountable.

Laws must not only be enacted but fully implemented, and offenders must face the full wrath of justice to serve as a deterrent.

We call on the government, lawmakers, healthcare institutions, and civil society to prioritise policies that protect women’s reproductive rights, provide comprehensive healthcare services, and uphold justice for victims of gender-based violations.

As journalists, we remain committed to shedding light on these critical issues, holding stakeholders accountable, and ensuring that no woman is denied the right to decide her health status.

A just and equitable society is only possible when women’s rights, including reproductive rights, are fully recognised and protected.

Happy International Women’s Day!
