Masquerades invasion of Mosque: Monarchs, stakeholders douse tension in Ondo community, parties reach peace accord

Traditional rulers and security agencies have doused tension in Oke-Agbe, the Headquarters of Akoko Northwest local government over invasion a Mosque and attack on family of an Imamin the town by some masquerades.

SUNSHINETRUTH News had reported how Scores of masquerade traditionalists allegedly invaded the house and mosque of the Chief Imam in Oke Agbe, Akoko, Akoko North Local Government, Ondo State and beat up the Imam’s wives and children.

The unprovoked attack occurred on Thursday, 12th June, 2025 in Oke Agbe Akoko, Akoko North Local Government, Ondo State and has been generating angry reactions from Islamic stakeholders.

However, key stakeholders including community and religious leaders have intervened and and the State Police Command Spokesperson, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the peace accord.

The PPRO said “All parties involved have agreed to maintain peace and uphold the terms of the settlement. Notably, the Traditionalist group denied imposing any fine or penalty on the Chief Imam.

“The Divisional Police Officer used the opportunity to urge all parties to continue to embrace peace and tolerance in the community. Normalcy has since returned, and the situation remains under close monitoring by the Police and other security agencies,” Ayanlade said.

SUBJECT: Resolution of Dispute between Traditional Egungun-Oge and Muslim Community

We, the Okeagbe Council of Obas, led by the Kabiyesi Ajana, alongside Kabiyesi Owage, EwiAje, and Oludo, among other stakeholders, are delighted to announce that after a productive and meaningful meeting with stakeholders, the recent dispute between Traditional Egungun-Oge and the Muslim community has been amicably and satisfactorily resolved. This development marks a significant milestone in our collective pursuit of peace, unity, and progress in Okeagbe, and we are optimistic that it will usher in a new era of cooperation and mutual understanding.

KEY POINTS:

  • Peaceful Coexistence: Both parties are earnestly urged to maintain peace and not trouble each other, ensuring a harmonious relationship that fosters mutual respect, understanding, and tolerance.
  • Joint Communication: To avoid misrepresentation and misinformation, no interviews should be granted that could tarnish Okeagbe’s image, except through joint press releases or conferences.
  • External Communication: The Okeagbe Muslim community is kindly requested to inform their counterparts outside Okeagbe that the dispute has been resolved, promoting a unified message and avoiding unnecessary tensions.
  • Clarification: We confirm that no fine was imposed on the Chief Imam or Muslim community, and we encourage all parties to focus on building bridges, rather than dwelling on past differences.
  • Religious Freedom: Everyone is free to practice their chosen religion without discrimination, and we reaffirm our commitment to promoting an inclusive and tolerant society.
  • Community Responsibility: The community will take necessary measures to discipline or report anyone who foments trouble or takes the law into their own hands.
