A Legacy of Integrity: Remembering President Muhammadu Buhari
It is with deep sorrow that I pay tribute to a distinguished leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, whose recent passing has created an immense void in the hearts of many Nigerians and around the world.
During his first tenure as head of state, our world experienced firsthand the integrity, principle, and discipline that defined his character, shaping the very landscape of our nation.
From the moment he assumed leadership, Buhari represented a vision for Nigeria anchored in justice, accountability, and a steadfast commitment to discipline as a national ethos. His return as an elected president marked a significant chapter in our history, during which I had the privilege of serving as one of his lawyers.
Though I critiqued aspects of his administration, I was often surprised by his openness and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. This openness was a testament to his character, as he not only acknowledged my perspectives but also honoured my contributions by bestowing upon me the esteemed title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Beyond the political realm, Buhari possessed a remarkable wit and humour that endeared him to many, qualities that often went unreported. I recall a moment when I called one of his media aides to express my frustration that his true nature was not being portrayed accurately. He had an extraordinary ability to notice the smallest details, infusing warmth and levity even in serious discussions.
I remember, in the midst of others, President Buhari declaring to me that I have good fortune. While expecting that he would announce my good fortune in the form of presidential largesse, he completed the sentence by saying my good fortune is in my physique, which suited my suit. That was the Buhari I knew, jovial, sharp-witted, and a formidable leader who was cherished by those close to him.
As I contemplate his life and legacy, I urge everyone to remember the countless contributions he made to our nation. His unwavering commitment to combating corruption and fostering national unity is a legacy that will endure. While he made mistakes, these should not serve to diminish his memory but rather to provide lessons in the pursuit of good governance, equality, and justice.
In this solemn moment, I offer prayers for the repose of his soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, family, and friends, including Modi, his in-law. May they find strength and solace in their memories of a man who dedicated his life to serving his country.
Let us also pray for Nigeria, that we may honour his legacy by striving for the corruption-free nation he envisioned. May President Muhammadu Buhari rest in peace, his spirit guiding us toward a brighter tomorrow.
