NUJ to Tinubu: Federal Roads in Southwest now death traps, in deplorable condition

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS, NUJ, ZONE B, IN IBADAN, OYO STATE

The Congress, held in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, was presided over by the Vice President, Zone B, Princess Ronke Samo and well attended by Zonal leaders across the southwest.

After extensive deliberation on various issues of concern, the Zonal leaders resolved as follows:

STATE OF THE UNION
The zone observed a high level of indiscipline, insubordination, and disrespect towards council leadership by members. Zonal leaders frowned upon this development and cautioned against such trends, warning that erring members would be sanctioned in line with the union’s constitution, irrespective of their position.

Leadership and members of Oyo and Ogun Councils are enjoined to maintain decorum before, during, and after their elections scheduled to hold before the end of this year.

Media proprietors are encouraged to employ professionals and support their staff who lack a journalism background to register for post graduate diploma courses (The minimum qualification for those who do not have journalism background, according to the constitution) at the International Institute of Journalism and other related institutions.

CAPACITY BUILDING
The Zonal leaders appreciate Amnesty International for the capacity-building workshop organized for journalists in the Southwest and call on other relevant organizations to follow suit, broadening the knowledge and capacity of media practitioners for improved service delivery.

Council leadership is encouraged to organize step-down trainings at their respective councils after attending workshops to ensure knowledge sharing.

ENVIRONMENT
The Congress drew the attention of State Governors in the Southwest, especially those in coaster states, to the forecast of destructive flooding by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA) and urged them to put in place adequate measures by channeling waterways and clearing debris on erosion courses.

STATE OF THE NATION
The zone expressed concern over the state of some federal roads in the Southwest, especially Ado-Ilesha road, Ibadan-Ile Ife-Ilesha-Akure road, Ibadan-Abeokuta road, Akure-Owo-Ikare-Kabba road Ado-Omuo-Ekiti-Kabba road, among others, and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to instruct the Ministry of Works to fix the affected roads due to their consequential impact on the economy and the citizenry.
