Ondo Assembly goes tough over killings of AAUA students

…….CONDEMNS INCESSANT KILLINGS IN ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY -CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION.

Members of the Ondo State House of Assembly led by the Speaker of the House , Rt. Hon. (Chief) Olamide Oladiji have expressed deep worry over the incessant killings in Adekunle Ajasin university, Akungba Akoko, calling on security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.

Expressing this during a plenary session held today at the House of Assembly complex, Akure, the lawmakers lamented over the gruesome murder of three students in a spate of two weeks.

The House Majority leader, Hon. (Chief) Olatunji Oshati moved the motion for the matter to be discussed on the floor and seconded by the lawmaker representing Akoko North West 1,Hon.Fatai Atere.

The lawmaker representing Akoko South West 2, Honourable Tope Agbulu had earlier sponsored the motion to discuss the issue under matter of urgent public importance.

According to him,the development is heartbreaking and disturbing,calling on Ondo State Government to urgently intervane in the matter .

Adding his voice,the House Deputy Speaker,Rt. Hon. Gbegudu Ololade, appealed to the security agencies in the State to investigate into the matter with a view to putting a stop to the ugly situation.

Also, the lawmaker representing Akoko North East Constituency, Hon. Oluwatoyin Japhet and his counterpart from lrele, Hon.( Dr)Chris Ogunlana, expressed displeasure and sadness over the worrisome killings.

In his contribution, the lawmaker representing Akure South 2 Constituency, Hon Steven Abitogun, expressed condolences to the families of the students, warning that such is capable of bringing the name of the host community to disrepute.

Commiserating with the Institution and the parents of the deceased, the House resolved with the following resolutions:That the House committees on Tertiary Institution and security should pay a visit to the school for on the spot assessment;that the Commissioner of Police in the State should beef up the security apparatus in the community to ensure the safety of the students; that the law enforcement agencies ensure that the suspects are arrested and duly prosecuted; called on the State Ministry of Women Affairs to come up with moral sensitization and awareness programmes for school students across the state.

In another development, the House has committed a bill for a law to establish Ondo Coastal Management Agency and for other matters connected therewith, 2025 to Committee on transport and public utility for scrutiny.

The House Majority leader, Honourable (Chief) Olatunji Oshati moved the motion for the passage of the bill into second reading and seconded by the lawmaker representing Akoko North West 1, Honourable Fatai Atere.

The sponsor and the lawmaker representing Ese Odo Constituency, Honourable (Primate) Oluwatoyin Halen, expressed optimism that the bill when passed into law would no doubt increase the internal generated revenue of Ondo State and at the same time provide employment, particularly for the people in the riverine area.

Also in his contribution,the House Deputy Speaker,Rt.Hon Gbegudu Ololade said that the activities of the Agency would be in line with the blue economy of the Federal government.

According to him,if the bill is passed into law, the Agency would curb crime in the area and open the coastal part of the state to a viable economic growth.

Speaking on the bill, the Speaker of the House appealed to other members to consider it for passage in the overall interest of the people of Ondo State.

While appreciating Governor Aiyedatiwa for his passion for growth and development at all times, Oladiji expressed confidence that the Agency would regulate the activities of the coastal area when passed into law.

The House later adjourned sitting till Wednesday,30 July,2025.
