The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure ( FUTATH) , Prof. Segun Ojo, has declared that there is an urgent need to keep raising the standard of training, research and service delivery at the institution so as to be able to contribute meaningfully to solving the health challenges of the society.

Prof. Ojo stated this at the commissioning and hand over ceremony of a 20-bedded, one-storey building for house officers (intern doctors) at the take off site of the FUTA Teaching Hospital on Friday.

The edifice which was built and donated by Chief Sunday Owoyemi, the Oluomo 1 of Akure Kingdom, was commissioned by the state governor, Hon.Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

In his address, CMD noted that the new Intern Doctors Quarter was not an end, but a stepping stone to even greater achievement for the institution

The CMD who said the institution is committed to creating an enabling environment for medical training and practice, noted that the interns , who are the direct beneficiaries of the project, represent the future of care in our nation.

According to him, “when we support them, we are indirectly investing in the health and well-being of millions of Nigerians who they will serve throughout their careers .

The CMD further stated that , “we are not merely unveiling a building. We are unveiling hope, stability, and progress. For many young doctors, especially those in their internship year, accommodation challenges often add to the weight of an already demanding training schedule.

“This building is therefore more than walls and a roof—it is a place of rest, comfort, and dignity. It is an environment where young doctors can focus on the noble task of learning and serving, without the burden of accommodation insecurity.

“This project highlights the power of collaboration between visionary individuals, traditional leadership, the government, and public institutions. It is proof that when we join hands, we can solve pressing societal challenges.

“Your Excellency, distinguished guests, I wish to assure you that under my watch, the management of this hospital will not take this gesture for granted. We shall ensure that this edifice is properly maintained, preserved, and put to optimal use. “

Speaking at the official handover, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the gesture as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state.

Aiyedatiwa lauded Owoyemi’s generosity, noting that the donation reflects the true spirit of partnership and collective responsibility.

According to him, “This project speaks eloquently to the spirit of partnership, philanthropy and collective responsibility which aligns perfectly with the OUR EASE agenda of our administration, especially in strengthening efficient healthcare and socio-economic welfare for the good people of Ondo State.”

The Governor emphasised that since assumption of office, his administration has prioritised healthcare, expanding access to affordable services across the state.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, describing it as a development that would revolutionise healthcare delivery, training, research, and employment opportunities.

According to him, the new building for intern doctors will help address the challenge of brain drain in the health sector.

“This building will help improve the welfare, morale and productivity of our young doctors, at a time when Nigeria grapples with the challenge of brain drain, or what is commonly called japa syndrome. An investment like this is a deliberate effort to retain talent, attract new professionals and reassure our medical personnel that Ondo State is a place to serve with pride,” he said.
