The Ondo State Government has embarked on Stakeholders’ Engagement Meeting organized by SOCU to expand the State Social Register, which is a socio-economic instrument that is built on trust and credibility.
The State Social Register, is being relied upon by government and key stakeholders to provide succour for the poor and vulnerable individuals/households towards addressing poverty in the Country.
Addressing participants at the stakeholders’ engagement meeting on expansion of the state social register held on Wednesday 24 September, 2025, in Akure, the Commissioner For Economic Planning And Budget, Hon. Olaolu Akindolire reiterated the Ondo State Government’s commitment to alleviating poverty and improving the livelihoods of its citizens through the expansion of the State Social Register.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of the Social Register as a critical socio-economic tool built on credibility and trust.
He noted that the register plays a vital role in providing targeted support to poor and vulnerable individuals and households across the state.
”The Social Register is more than just a database, It is a platform that facilitates social protection, targeted support, and economic empowerment to those who need it the most.”
”Our Ministry will work hand-in-hand with development partners, government agencies, and local stakeholders to ensure optimal allocation of resources for inclusive growth,” Akindolire said.
Earlier while welcoming participants, the Ondo State SOCU Coordinator, Barr. Bankole Olaoluwa called on stakeholders particularly local government chairmen to take full ownership of the ongoing expansion of the state’s social register.
Bankole noted that while the State Social Register has been developed over the last seven years, there is a pressing need to continuously update it and include new households in need of support.
The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Ondo State (ALGON), and Akure South Local Government Chairman, Gbenga Fasua expressed gratitude for the initiatives which he said is aimed at expanding and redesigning the current social support systems for greater inclusivity.
“We are very, very grateful for the supplementary support being introduced. This is a significant step toward redesigning our system to ensure more inclusivity so that more vulnerable individuals can be captured and supported.”
He commended the progress made so far and acknowledged the efforts to expand the system’s capacity and assure of ALGON’s unwavering support across all local governments.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, Prince Leke Adegbite called for greater media involvement in the implementation and expansion of the State Social Register, stressing the media’s critical role in promoting awareness, transparency, and inclusive development.
Represented by the Ondo State Financial Secretary of NUJ, Dr (Mrs) Omosileola Adesoye-Ajayi, Prince Adegbite who harped on the need to strengthen media collaboration around the Social Register initiative expressed the readiness of the Union to support the expansion move in the state.
“We remain committed to supporting efforts that foster good governance and social inclusion, together, we can ensure that no one is left behind.”
