Otunba Ogunwumiju chaired Ondo Assembly committee begins amendment of State Public Audit Law, targets accountability

STRENGTHENING TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN ONDO STATE

I had the honour as Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts to host stakeholders at the Ondo State House of Assembly for a meeting on the proposed amendment to the Ondo State Public Audit Law 2021.

The meeting, which was declared open by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji (Landmark), ably represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ololade Gbegudu, reflected the commitment of the Assembly to strengthen transparency, accountability, and good governance in our state.

In my remarks as Chairman, Public Accounts Committee (PAC), I shared the history of the Public Audit Law, which was first enacted in 2017 under a World Bank-assisted reform programme and later reviewed in 2021 under the SFTAS initiative. I also emphasised that laws must be reviewed from time to time to close gaps, address new realities, and meet global standards.

The engagement brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the executive arm, the Office of the Auditor-General, civil society organisations, and other important institutions. Their meaningful contributions will guide the Assembly in producing a stronger, more effective audit law that will further promote the prudent use of public funds.

I sincerely appreciate the Speaker for his leadership, my colleagues for their continued support, and all participants for their active involvement.

Together, we remain committed to building a transparent and accountable system that serves the best interest of the people of Ondo State.
