Road crash: How Anthony Joshua cheated death in Ogun, two die, as FRSC reacts

Former two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has cheated death as he sustained minor injuries in a road traffic crash on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu in Ogun State, Nigeria.

The accident claimed the lives of two passengers in his vehicle.

According to a statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred around noon in the Sinoma area, involving a black Lexus Jeep (registration KRD 850 HN) carrying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck.

FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal and Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary investigations revealed that the Lexus was travelling above the legal speed limit and lost control during a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre, leading it to collide with the parked truck.

“A total of five adult males were involved. Two died on the spot, one sustained injuries, and two escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was among those rescued alive with minor injuries,” the statement read.

FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes, conducting rescue operations, evacuating victims, and managing traffic to prevent secondary incidents. The injured, including Joshua, were rushed to an undisclosed hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola (earlier referred to as Babaseyi Oluseyi in some reports), confirmed the incident, stating that Joshua and other injured persons were receiving medical attention. Police have commenced a full investigation.

Eyewitness accounts reported to Punch Newspaper described a two-vehicle convoy: the Lexus SUV with four occupants (Joshua seated in the rear) followed by a Pajero SUV carrying his security detail. The front-seat passenger and the individual beside Joshua reportedly died instantly.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery. The FRSC reiterated warnings against excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, and traffic violations, especially on high-risk corridors like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway during the festive season.

“Motorists are urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety over haste,” the agency added.

Joshua, of British-Nigerian heritage with family ties in Sagamu, was reportedly visiting relatives following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19, 2025.
