Ahead of February 26, 2022 bye-election for Akure North/Akure South federal constituency in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it would use the voters’ register used for the 2019 general elections for the exercise.
Ambassador (Dr.) Rufus Akeju, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, disclosed this in Akure on Friday in preparation of the INEC for the bye-election.
He explained that those who had registered in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in June 2021 till date would not be able to vote during the bye-election because the data from the CVR were yet to be aggregated.
- The electoral body has a total of 365,088 registered voters for both Akure North and Akure South in 2019.
- Akure North has 74,825 registered voters while Akure South has 290,267 registered voters in the same year.
- The newly introduced technology, Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS), would also be deployed for the process/exercise of the bye-election.
- The BVAS would accredit voters through fingerprints or facials as well as transmit the results of polls from polling units to the INEC Results Viewing (IRev) portal of the commission in real-time.
- 7 political parties; A, ADP, APP APC, PDP, SDP, and NRM would be participating in the bye-election.
- The election would start at 8:30 am and end by 2:30 pm.
