…..Implement pension consequential adjustment in Southwest —NUP tells govs
Retirees under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have called on Southwest governors to immediately commence the implementation of the recently approved consequential adjustment and increase in pension to reflect the new National Minimum Wage.
Similarly, the pensioners who noted with concern the proposed #380 per litre of fuel, lambasted state governors for planning with the federal government to impoverish and subject retirees and other nigerians to further untold hardship
President Muhammadu Buhari’s Federal Government had recently approved adjustment in pensions of retirees under the defined benefit pension scheme arising from the implementation of the New National Minimum Wage Act 2019.
The Southwest Chairman of NUP, Elder Ayo Ikumapayi and the Union’s southwest Public Relations Officer, Comrade Olusegun Abatan gave the indications in Akure, the Ondo state capital during the zonal meeting of the southwest leaders of NUP
Elder Ikumapayi said the suffering of senior citizens in the country after serving the nation was becoming unbearable, urging the southwest governors to rescue pensioners from untimely death by implementing the pension increment as approved under the new national minimum wage.
The NUP southwest chairman, blamed economic woes facing the nation on lack of creativity in the management of the economy and governance by most government’s appointees and most state governors.
Also speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the NUP southwest PRO, Comrade Abatan cautioned against favouritism and irregularities in the payment of gratuities in Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti, but commended lagos and ondo state governments for implementing 33.4% pension increase for deserving retirees.
Comrade Abatan also expressed great displeasure over high rate of insecurity in all part of the country, urging government at all levels to be proactive in engaging youths gainfully, warning that hike in pump price and electricity tariff would further expose the nation to security challenges.
“Most of our governors in Nigeria are lazy, they are not creative, they just relax and expect only funds from federation allocation. They can not devise means of generating revenues, they can’t adjust their flamboyant lifestyle, reduce number of their appointees to enable them attend to needs of elderly pensioners who are suffering.
“We urge our governors in the southwest to implement the consequential adjustment and increase in pension to reflect the new National Minimum Wage. Our retirees are suffering, some even go home with as little as #600 per month.
“We also appeal to our governors to exclude pensioners from percentage monthly salary payment. Let’s our members get their full pensions. It is not good enough,” Abatan said.
