Guber poll: Why INEC must redeploy Ondo REC, Youth Groups Protest

Some Youths in Ondo State on Wednesday stormed the state headquarters of the National Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akure, demanding the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola over alleged fraternization with some political actors ahead of the November 16, 2024 governorship Election in the state.

The Youths who carried placards with different inscription described the allegations against the Resident Electoral Commissioner as unhealthy and unprofessional which could undermine the process.

The youths groups whose identity and sponsored are unknown as at the time of filing this report, refused to mentioned the politicians the REC was alleged to be frantising with.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, Ijanusi Olawale alleged that Mrs Balalola has been romancing with some politicains.

Ijanusi who cautioned Babalola to desist from such act it the rumour was true, however demanded the removal of the INEC REC for the sake of the election.

He said the youths demanded for a free and fair election, asking the INEC not to be bais but be transparent and ensure free and fair election in the state.

Addressing the protesters, the Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Mr Biodun Amosu said, “One thing we must confirm is that peaceful protest is allowed in our democracy. To us, you have not done anything bad. Thank you for being peaceful.

“Let us assure you that the issue will be handled by the INEC Chairman. The Chairman will look into the demand.

“But one thing which we assure you that votes in Ondo State will count.

“We can assure you that once you have your agents in your polling booth, you man your votes, you protect your votes, nothing can happen.

“And the caliber of officers here, we can assure you, will always work to ensure that our votes count. Please, be with us, work with us, let us work together.

“We will look at the various issues. We can assure you that the issue will be adequately flogged. But one thing that is important, votes will count in Ondo State,” the INEC top official said.
