The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ondo State Branch, has commenced its annual Physicians’ Week with series of events aimed at spotlighting the dedication of healthcare professionals and addressing the numerous challenges within the sector.
This year’s theme focused on the urgent need for improved working conditions, fair remuneration, and stronger support from the government.
Addressing a news conference in Akure, to unveil activities lined up for the week celebration, Dr. Abel Olumuyiwa Alonge, the Chairman of the NMA Ondo State, emphasized the critical issues of salary disparities, inadequate infrastructure, and the disturbing “brain drain” affecting the healthcare system.
Dr. Alonge pointed out that “under the current system, there is a lack of competitive salary and benefits packages, which has driven many experienced doctors to seek better opportunities abroad, thereby increasing the workload for those who remain.
Dr. Alonge called on “the government to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) across all healthcare levels and to promptly address outstanding arrears.
He stressed that without fair, transparent, and universally applicable remuneration, Nigeria would continue to lose talented professionals to other countries. “We cannot expect to retain the best and brightest if we are not willing to invest in our healthcare workforce,” he said.
Throughout the week, the NMA Chairman said it organized several activities, including a lecture on recent health concerns such as the rise in monkeypox cases, which was attended by healthcare workers across the state.
Dr. Alonge highlighted the importance of continuous training and research, noting that the government has a role in equipping medical professionals to handle emerging health threats effectively.
In addition to professional development, the Physicians’ Week included a community outreach event where members of the association, led by Dr. Alonge and supported by the executive committee, will visit the Ark Orphanage Home on Ijare Road.
While on Wednesday, the NMA will hold an online lecture discussing the need for income consistency across state and federal healthcare levels, advocating for equal pay for doctors at all levels.
Thursday will feature the Ordinary General Meeting, and the week will conclude with a “Walk for Health” on Saturday, aimed at promoting wellness and unity among healthcare professionals.
While Dr. Alonge expressed gratitude to the Ondo State government and various stakeholders for their support, he reiterated that more investment is needed to ensure a conducive working environment.
He said “Improving healthcare is not just about salaries. We need better infrastructure and working conditions that give our doctors satisfaction in their roles.”
In a poignant moment, Dr. Alonge honored the memory of colleagues who have passed away, acknowledging their sacrifices and dedication. “These were men and women who dedicated their lives to the service of others. Their legacies live on,” he said, urging all healthcare workers to continue serving as healers, protectors, and advocates.
Other members of the NMA Ondo State Branch executive committee, including Dr. Olubosede Omolayo (Vice Chairman I), Dr. Olaopa Olutobi Gideon (Secretary), Dr. Buari Ifedayo (Vice Chairman II), Dr. Adeniyi Adetayo Patrick (Treasurer), Dr. Adeola O. Oreofe (Financial Secretary), Dr. Babatunde Akinbinu (Public Relations Officer), Dr. Omoseshin Adeyemi-Osowe (Immediate Past Chairman), and Dr. Adeayo O. Omotehinse (Immediate Past IPA, NMA Ondo State), are instrumental in organizing and participating in the event.
Their combined efforts underscored the association’s commitment to advancing healthcare standards in Ondo State.
