NISSIN congratulates new NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya on election

NISSIN CELEBRATES COMRADE ALHASSAN YAHAYA AND THE NEW NUJ NATIONAL EXECUTIVES WITH HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS

On behalf of the Nursing Image and Standard Support Initiative of Nigeria (NISSIN), we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Comrade Alhassan Yahaya on his emergence as the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State. We also felicitate with all the newly elected national executives of the Union for this well-deserved recognition of your leadership abilities.

Your election is a testament to the trust and confidence your members have in your vision and dedication to steering the NUJ towards greater achievements. The NUJ, being a vital pillar in nation-building and democracy, requires leaders with foresight, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to truth and professionalism—qualities we are confident you possess in abundance.

As custodians of media integrity, we believe the NUJ plays a significant role in shaping public perception across various professions. It is on this note that we introduce you to the Nursing Image and Standard Support Initiative of Nigeria (NISSIN), a body dedicated to promoting quality professional image and standards in nursing training and practices in Nigeria.

Our Objectives Include:

  1. Promoting Quality Professional Image and Standards in nursing training and practices through globally relevant curricula, moral principles, ethics, and positive media representation.
  2. Advancing research, professional development, and initiatives among nurses via scholarships, conferences, symposia, seminars, and workshops.
  3. Eradicating quackery in nursing training and practices across Nigeria.
  4. Collaborating with the government to create a leeway for healthcare quacks, enabling them to exit unethical practices.
  5. Liaising with the government to develop and enact legislations that support viable healthcare delivery through evidence-based research.
  6. Enhancing the health status of Nigerians through public enlightenment on ideal health-seeking behaviors.
  7. Supporting grassroots healthcare development, accessibility, and affordability in collaboration with the government and health agencies.

As advocates for professionalism and positive change, we express our displeasure with the persistent negative portrayal of the nursing profession by some media outlets over the years. A critical issue is the misuse of the revered title “NURSE” to describe unqualified individuals such as auxiliaries. This practice undermines the integrity of our profession and misleads the public.

For clarity, the title “NURSE” is exclusive to individuals who have:

Successfully attended an accredited College of Nursing or University licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) or the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Met all prerequisites and are duly licensed by the NMCN.

NISSIN is committed to reshaping these misconceptions and working collaboratively with the NUJ to educate the public about the true image of nursing as a noble and highly professional discipline.

Once again, we congratulate you, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and the entire NUJ leadership. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration between NISSIN and the NUJ in advancing accurate and professional media representation across all sectors.

Signed:
Prince (Squad Nr.) Lucky Okikiola AREMU.
National PRO, NISSIN / Ondo State Coordinator.

Squad Nr. Abiola Ogunniyi
Convener / National Coordinator of NISSIN.
