In a significant move towards reinforcing the advocacy and welfare of Nigerian workers, Hon. Dr. Asiwaju Adegboyega Adefarati, Chairman of the House Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, led a delegation on a working visit to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja on February 14, 2025.
The visit marks a cornerstone in the collaborative efforts between the legislative body and labour unions, aimed at enhancing the welfare of the nation’s workforce.
In his address to the distinguished members of the NLC, Hon. Adefarati commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his committed stance on worker welfare, evident in the prompt passage and implementation of the national minimum wage law.
Notably, the reduction of the review period for this law from five years to three years was highlighted as a forward-thinking step that underscores the government’s dedication to timely interventions in labour issues.
The visit culminated in constructive dialogue, with the NLC leadership, under Comrade Joseph Ajaero, expressing appreciation for the proactive engagement of the House Committee.
Comrade Ajaero recognized the visit as unprecedented and lauded the National Assembly’s swift action on the new minimum wage law. However, he also highlighted ongoing concerns regarding its implementation and the need for tax relief for workers.
Responding to these concerns, Hon. Adefarati pledged that the House of Representatives would thoroughly examine the issues highlighted and work towards viable solutions, reinforcing his commitment to upholding the rights and well-being of Nigerian workers.
He praised the NLC for its pivotal role in maintaining a collaborative relationship with the National Assembly, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in overcoming challenges and fostering mutual respect.
