PRESS RELEASE

ONDO STATE POLICE COMMAND WARNS AGAINST TAKING LAWS INTO ONE’S HANDS – SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ALLEGED MURDER CASE AT AKUNGBA

The Ondo State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, wishes to inform members of the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on 20th September, 2025, at Akunmi Quarters, Akungba.

At about 1430hrs, the Police received a report of a young boy who had been severely assaulted after being accused of plucking cocoa pods from a farm. He was brought to the station in an unconscious state, and officers immediately directed that he be taken for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, at about 1736hrs, he was confirmed dead at the hospital.

The complainant (owner of stolen cocoa) was promptly arrested, while the deceased’s remains were deposited at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Akure, for discreet investigation with a view to ensuring that justice is served.

The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns this tragic development and once again cautions members of the public against resorting to self-help or jungle justice under any circumstance. Citizens are urged to resist the temptation of taking laws into their own hands, but rather report all infractions, disputes, or criminal acts to the Police and allow due process of the law to prevail.

CP Adebowale Lawal also appreciates the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, for his visionary policing agenda and continuous support to State Commands, which have further strengthened the capacity of the Ondo State Command to respond swiftly to incidents and maintain law and order across the State.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the Command assures the general public that the matter will be handled with the utmost fairness, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law.

The Ondo State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and calls on residents to continue to partner with the Police in ensuring peace, security, and justice in the State.
