How Media Industry loses another Popular Broadcaster in Ondo

The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran broadcaster Johnson Olajide Ibikunle, popularly known as Mr. Gbeborun.

The ace broadcaster, celebrated for his captivating voice, humour, and engaging presentation style, reportedly passed away on Monday night, after decades of outstanding contribution to the growth of radio broadcasting in Nigeria.

Until his demise, Mr. Gbeborun had anchored several popular programmes on Radio Nigeria Positive FM, Akure, and Adaba FM, Akure among others — where his witty delivery, humour, and storytelling flair earned him a loyal fan base.

Though details surrounding his death were still sketchy as of press time, a reliable source said he was not sick but slumped and died during medical attention.

One Emiloju Smart announced the sad news in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

Another source also confirmed that the broadcaster died on Monday night, though no official statement has yet been released.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and fans who described Mr. Gbeborun as a consummate professional, a mentor to many, and one of the golden voices that defined radio broadcasting in Ondo State and beyond.

His passing marks the end of an era for many who grew up tuning in to his lively programmes and infectious laughter.

ANBROAD ONDO STATE MOURNS MR. OLAJIDE IBIKUNLE (MR. GBEBORUN)

The Association of Nigerian Broadcasters (ANBROAD), Ondo State Chapter, has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of one of its prominent members, Mr. Olajide Ibikunle, popularly known as Mr. Gbeborun, who passed away on Monday, 20th October 2025.

In a statement issued by the Corporate Communications Secretary of the association, Mr. Adekunle Adewumi, ANBROAD described the late Mr. Ibikunle as a passionate and committed broadcaster whose energy and creativity added immense value to the media landscape in Ondo State.

The statement noted that Mr. Ibikunle’s passing is a painful loss to the broadcasting family, as he was known for his humour, professionalism, and commitment to the growth of the industry.

ANBROAD, Ondo State, extended its heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the entire Ibikunle family, praying that God grants them strength and comfort during this difficult time.

The association added that Mr. Gbeborun’s legacy of passion and dedication will continue to inspire broadcasters across the state.
