Lawal, Marafa Hit a Wall as Tinubu Not Interested In Sacrificing Loyalist Matawalle

Senator Kabiru Marafa and Governor Dauda Lawal’s long-running efforts to push for the removal of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, have reportedly hit significant roadblocks.

Sources within the APC say that despite repeated lobbying, the Presidency has refused to entertain the call, largely because President Tinubu considers Matawalle a loyalist whose service and commitment have been unwavering.

Insiders describe the situation as a growing source of frustration for both Marafa and Lawal, who had expected more traction in their maneuvering. “The President has not given any listening ear to their agitations,” one party source noted. “Matawalle is not shy to stand his ground, even publicly, and that is making their campaign extremely difficult.”

Sources reveal that Governor Lawal has been vigorously reaching out to progressive governors across the country, seeking their support to speak on his behalf in the ears of President Tinubu. “He is trying to build a chorus of voices to influence the Presidency,” an insider said, “but so far, it hasn’t worked — the President remains firm in his stance.”

Party analysts say the pushback underscores the limits of factional pressure within APC, especially when loyalty and track record are taken into account. Efforts to publicly frame the Minister as a liability have so far failed to sway the Presidency, leaving Marafa and Lawal to recalibrate their strategy ahead of the next political cycle.

Observers note that this impasse could have broader implications for Zamfara’s political alignment ahead of 2027, as Lawal’s ambitions remain on hold and internal rivalries intensify, potentially shaping which factions gain influence within both the state and national party structures.
