The Ondo State Government has issued a strong safety advisory to operators in the oil and gas sector, particularly filling station owners and managers across Ondo State, urging strict compliance with established safety regulations to avert preventable disasters.
The safety advisory was made on Tuesday December 23, 2025 through the Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Emergency Response, Hon. (Prince) Wellington Oriade Adebawo, emphasizing that the handling, storage, and dispensing of petroleum products are highly sensitive operations that demand maximum caution at all times.
The Governor’s aide specifically warned against the practice of offloading petroleum products in the afternoon or during peak daytime hours, noting that high temperatures, increased vehicular movement, and human traffic significantly heighten the risk of fire outbreaks and explosions.
The Special Assistant further admonished filling station operators to align their operations with extant safety standards as prescribed by relevant regulatory agencies.
This includes ensuring functional fire-fighting equipment, proper earthing of facilities, trained personnel on duty, controlled access during fuel discharge, and adherence to approved operational timelines. He also stressed the importance of regular safety drills, clear safety signage, and cooperation with emergency response agencies.
Hon. Adebawo reiterated the Ondo State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and critical infrastructure, warning that negligence, shortcuts, or deliberate disregard for safety protocols will not be tolerated.
He called on all stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to see safety as a collective responsibility, adding that proactive compliance remains the surest way to prevent avoidable tragedies and ensure a safe environment for workers and the general public.
