The Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, (SAN) has challenged workers in the aviation industry to shun all acts of bribery and other forms of corruption and improve processes in their operations for better service delivery in the aviation sector.
Owasanoye gave the charge during the ongoing two-day sensitization workshop organized for aviation workers in conjunction with Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), held at Akure Airport.
The ICPC Chairman, represented by Mr. Tope Egunjobi said ICPC in collaboration with ACTU said it embarked on the educative interventions to sensitise workers in the aviation sector on the ills of corruption with a view to cleansing the industry of corrupt practices.
“The ICPC expects international best practices and standard from Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, being the gateway to the nation’s economy and image that projects Nigeria to the World.
“Therefore, you should not rest On your oars in ensuring that you do your best in meeting the yearning and demands of travelers and the ever Critical patrons of your services”.
“I would also like to use this unique opportunity to commend the Director General and the entire management team fer taking necessary steps in making sure the Unit is well financed and supported in discharging its role as stipulated the ACTU Standing Order in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive on establishing the Unit in all Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs).
“The Unit is intended to complement the efforts of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in the fight
against corruption especially in the public service and the country at large.
“Established by the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, the Commission has 3-fold mandate of enforcing the provisions of the Act through investigating and prosecuting 0f the corrupt persons (Enforcement); Preventing corruption in government establishments (Prevention); and educating and mobilizing public on/against corruption.
In her remark, the Manager of the Akure Airport, Mrs Rita Joke Olatunji said the Sensitization would go a long way in consolidating clean record, transparency and diligence that workers of Akure Airport were known for over the years.
Olatunji who declared that no corruption case had been recorded among the staffers of the airport, cautioned her staff against demanding or collecting bribe from flight passengers to avoid full weight of the law.
The Airport Manager said, “the Sensitization is about integrity, it’s about performing your duty without gratification and as time goes on, we hope to continually remind our workers on the call.”
The FAAN ACTU Chairman, Mr Jimoh Sanni, represented by Mrs Lola Ameobi explained that “the worksnop is aimed at creating AntiCorruption awareness and to curb corruption and corrupt practices at our Airports”.
Jimoh noted that “ACTU derive it’s powers from the provisions of Section 6(a) —(t) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act, 2000, empowers, it to serve as compliance and ethics officers, with the sole -aim of educating and enlightening their respective MDAs on the need for adherence to rules, regulations and upholding of ethical practices in the work place.
Titled “Anti-Corruption Ethics and Training,” the Sensitization featured lectures on Enhancing Transparency and Accountability in the aviation sector.
