Jegede vs Aketi: What may happen today at Supreme Court

The nation’s apex court, Supreme Court sitting in Abuja will today Wednesday, July 28, 2021 consider the prayer of candidate of the PDP in the October 10, 2020 Governorship election in Ondo state, Eyitayo Jegede challenging the reelection of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the APC.

Jegede who had earlier lost his case at the Election Petition Tribunal and the Appeal Court, is seeking to nullify the nomination of Governor Akeredolu as the candidate of the APC by the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, who is the Acting National Chairman of the party.

Jegede is relying on the constitutional provision which forbids sitting Governors from holding executive positions outside their statutory position as Governor.

Counsels to parties are expected to make their submissions and adopt their arguments before the Apex Court today.

One of the counsels to the parties informed SUNSHINETRUTH that the Supreme Court may also decide the fate of Jegede and Akeredolu today.

Recall that the Appellate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State Capital on June 16 dismissed the appeal sought by Jegede, for lacking in merit.

The Appeal Court led by Hon. Justice Theresa Orji-Abadua dismissed Jegede’s suit for non-joinder of Buni.

The defendants – Akeredolu; his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the APC had told the Appellate Court that the prayer of the plaintiff is a preelection matter and that the lower tribunal has no jurisdiction in the first place to hear the case. The Appeal Court ruled against them.

Watch out for update from SUNSHINETRUTH today…….
